The Adaptec 5400S has been designed with performance in mind. It utilizes a 64-bit PCI interface and a powerful 233MHz Intel StrongARM SA-110 RISC microprocessor. It also has a dedicated XOR chip, which greatly improves RAID 5 performance. With four Ultra160 SCSI channels, the Adaptec 5400S is capable of attaching up to 60 disk drives. It comes with 128 MByte of ECC SDRAM cache memory, expandable to 256 MByte.

Users can configure multiple arrays per disk drive, each with its own RAID level, stripe size, and file system.
